Musculoskeletal injections are procedures that provide pain relief when other options such as physiotherapy or oral medications are ineffective. The procedure is performed under the guidance of ultrasound equipment to ensure accurate injections.
Who performs the procedure?
Our interventional radiologist in our state of the art facilities will be performing the musculoskeletal injections using advanced ultrasound equipment. The precise injections ensure better outcomes for the patient and reduced discomfort after the procedure is finished.
Before the procedure
There are no specific requirements prior to the procedure. However, please notify your doctor immediately if you are currently taking any medications. You may need to stop taking certain types of blood thinning medications such as aspirin or Warfarin for several days.
During the procedure
The injection site will be thoroughly cleaned with an antiseptic prior to injecting local anaesthetic to the affected area. A needle will then be carefully positioned by our interventional radiologist before injecting the medicine.
The anaesthetic will help to reduce any discomfort you may feel. The entire procedure is generally quick and only takes approximately 15 minutes to complete.
After the procedure
You may experience immediate pain relief after the procedure due to the anaesthetic. The medication from the injection typically takes 2 days to take effect. Patients are able to resume normal activities but are advised to refrain from any heavy lifting for at least 24 hours.
Complications with musculoskeletal injections are rare although minor discomfort should be expected which is only temporary. Side effects vary depending on the injection performed. Your doctor will provide a more detailed overview of the procedure.
