Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy is a procedure that involves injecting proliferate solution to treat connective tissue injuries and cause a growth of the collagen issue. The goal is to strengthen ligaments damaged by trauma or injury and to gradually reduce pain.

The proliferate solution injected into the tissue causes a cascade of biological reactions. The release of pre-collagen growth factor (PGF) encourages growth of fibroblasts into the injection area which then secrete the collagen tissue. The process allows natural healing to take place which can take between 6 to 8 weeks to complete.

Prolotherapy is not a form of immediate pain relief and patients that choose to undergo the procedure experience a gradual improvement. There are 6 to 8 week waiting periods between each injection.

Who will perform the procedure?

Patients in our care can expect to receive quality treatment in our facilities. One of our experienced interventional radiologists will be performing the prolotherapy procedure. If this procedure is recommended, your doctor will be able to give you more information and answer your questions about prolotherapy.

Before the procedure

If you are taking any anti-inflammatory medications, please notify your doctor immediately. Certain medications may help to reduce pain but can also hinder the effectiveness of prolotherapy including:

  • Aspirin
  • Advil
  • Nurofen
  • Nurofen Plus
  • Voltaren
  • Hydrocortisone
  • Prednisone

We recommend other pain relief drugs such as Panadol, Panadeine, Digesic, and Tramadol. These drugs are suitable leading up to the treatment and after the injections are complete. You may discuss the details with your doctor if you have any questions.

After the procedure

Patients are advised to refrain from performing any heavy lifting or high levels of physical activity for at least 48 hours. Depending on how you feel, you may be able to resume normal daily activities after treatment. You may be referred to a physiotherapist to have strapping applied.
